How Much Time to Allow for Euston Station During the HS2 Works

How Much Time to Allow for Euston Station During the HS2 Works

Allow fifteen minutes from handing back your key card to standing under the departure boards at Euston. That's the answer most of our guests are after, and it holds despite the hoardings outside. Twenty is more comfortable if you're travelling with a large case or you don't know the station well.

The walk itself is three minutes, which is what we've always published and what it remains. The extra time in that fifteen isn't the walk. It's the crossing at Euston Road, the ticket barriers, and the wait for a platform number that Euston tends to give out later than you'd like.

What the works actually affect

The current utility diversions along Euston Street and North Gower Street are vehicle works rather than pedestrian ones. HS2 has stated in its notices that access on foot to properties and to Euston Station is maintained throughout, and that has matched our experience of walking it every day. Euston Street has been under closures and lane reductions through the summer, and North Gower Street has been closed at the Euston Road end with no vehicle access from Drummond Street.

The practical upshot is that walking has been the reliable way to travel from here, and anything on wheels is what needs planning around. If you want to see where the work has got to before you travel, the HS2 Euston main site works page is updated as each phase progresses. Hoarding moves as the job moves, so please take any route description, ours included, as a guide and follow the signage in front of you on the day.

The route from our door

Turn right as you leave us, then left, then take the first right. When you get to the station, use the back entrance rather than walking round to the main road frontage. It's shorter, and it avoids the forecourt, which is where most people lose their time rather than on the walk over.

The walking times in the middle column are our own published figures. The allowances in the third are what we'd tell you at the desk if you asked, and they build in everything that happens either side of the walk.

If you're planning to travel by car

We don't have a car park, and with Euston Street under works a taxi may not be able to draw up directly outside. If you've booked one, allow extra time and expect to walk the last stretch to meet it. For most journeys within central London we'd point you towards Euston Square or Warren Street instead, which is usually quicker and puts one fewer car on roads that are already working hard. Parking restrictions apply on the surrounding streets from Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 18:30. You'll find more on arriving and on nearby parking on our Euston Station area page and in our frequently asked questions.

Things that give you time back

Breakfast starts at 7am on weekdays and 7:30 at weekends, so an early departure doesn't have to mean leaving on an empty stomach. If you've checked out and your train isn't until later, we can hold your bag for the day, which frees those hours up for something better than sitting with a case at the station. Late check-out is usually possible when we have the room available, charged by the hour.

If you'd like the current position before you set off, ask at reception. The team walk past the works every day and will tell you if anything has changed since this was written.
